La Casa

La Casa is an outreach project, targeted towards Latino/a students, on the University of Illinois campus. La Casa invites students and members of the community to freely paint a portion of the exterior of the La Casa house in order to signify what the organization means to them.

Goal
The goal of this project is to inspire students to feel welcome inside and outside of the La Casa home, and to collaborate with those whose lives have been positively impacted by La Casa.

Year

Collaborative project 2021

  • The purpose of conducting research was to determine the needs and desires of the students who utilize La Casa. Reading articles, blog posts, and stories based on the lives on Latino/a students was critical to conducting research.

  • An interview was conducted with La Casa’s coordinator, Julio. Julio described the needs and desires of students, gave a tour of La Casa, and was an available resource while the entire project was being carried out.

  • Not all students on campus know about La Casa and the resources/ safe place that is provided for the Latinx community. Outreach is needed to grow the La Casa community. Mural paintings and/ or artwork that is culturally responsive, can be used to make the house feel welcoming to all different groups of people.

The subpage of this website goes on to explore an overview of the project, impact, inspiration, emotional meaning, and a set of tools that students can utilize when creating their painting

Developing the Brand

Dream it

Build it

Grow it

Currently, from the outside, La Casa is a plain and normal house. Over time, the house will transform into a recognizable icon on the University of Illinois campus to promote comfort, outreach, and inclusivity.

Branding

Font: Custom drawn

Colors: beige, maroon, and multiple variations of purple

It is important to know that this project has no deadline. This project is intended to continue for years to come so that a wide range of students will have the opportunity to express themselves.

This painting and the butterflies that are represented within it (comfort, transformation, and endurance), encourage students to consider their experiences with La Casa.
